Surprise reunion at Dads Take Your Child to School Day

A Schuyler Achievement Academy dad and his daughters meet up with dad's former teacher.

Dads Take Your Child to School Day was especially meaningful for Germaine Montes, who took his daughters to school on Tuesday at Philip Schuyler Achievement Academy and had a surprise reunion with a favorite teacher.

Montes is the father of Schuyler second-grader Nevaeh Montes and third-grader Onnavey McKinney. He attended the former Philip Schuyler Elementary School in the late 1990s, and Elizabeth Flynn taught him in fifth grade and sixth grade.

Miss Flynn is now Mrs. Lentini and co-teaches a fifth grade class at Schuyler Achievement Academy.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today without Miss Flynn,” Montes said. Lentini credits Montes with being the smartest student she ever worked with.

Montes was one of 147 fathers, father-figures and male role models that packed the Schuyler Achievement Academy cafeteria Tuesday. The Schuyler breakfast was one of several Dads Take Your Child to School Day events happening in City School District of ÉðÊ¿Âþ» schools. The day is part of a national effort to get men more involved in their children’s education.

Also at Schuyler were New York State Office of Children and Family Services Commissioner Sheila Poole and Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance Deputy Commissioner Kenneth Crannell. They served breakfast to dads and provided drawstring bags for every student, and Poole read a proclamation from Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
