The City School District of ÉðÊ¿Âþ»'s Maintenance and OperationsDepartment keeps track of 879 classrooms, 21 buildings, 2.1 million square feet of building space, 6.5 miles of sidewalks, 121 acres of lawns, playgrounds, athletic fields and parking lots.
The department also is responsible for cleaning, regular maintenance, snow removal, overseeing all construction and complying with local, state and federal health and safety regulations.
The department is made up of head custodians, custodial workers, maintenance workers, labor foremen, secretaries, an alarm technician and a turf manager who serve our schools and the district as a whole.

The City School District of ÉðÊ¿Âþ»’s buildings and grounds are maintained primarily for the purpose of educating students. However, the Board of Education recognizes that district facilities are a valuable community resource and believes they should be available to the community for uses that will not interfere with educational activities or disrupt district operations such as renovation or maintenance.
Please note that applications are required to be submitted at least 30 days in advance of an event. We recommend that requests for use for the spring, summer and fall seasons are submitted no earlier than Feb. 1 and no later than Feb. 28 of the calendar year.
The City School District of ÉðÊ¿Âþ» will provide information to parents, guardians and staff who want to receive advance notice about pesticide use.
The district uses pesticides as a last resort. And when pesticides are used, the district practices Integrated Pest Management (IPM) -- a process for managing, preventing and suppressing pests with minimal impact on human health and the environment. The district hires outside pest-control contractors who are required to follow IPM procedures. IPM is most successful when teachers, students, employees and contractors work together.

Recycling not only conserves natural resources and reduces the amount of waste that must be burned or buries -- it also reduces pollution and the demand for energy. The City School District of ÉðÊ¿Âþ» participates in three large-scale recycling efforts, two of which bring dollars back into the district.
Office paper, newspaper, magazines and non-corrugated cardboard are sold to a local recycling center. Each building receives a check for the recycled items sold.
Discarded metal items are also sold to a local recycling center. The district is paid by weight of the metal.
The district also contracts with Waste Management to recycle corrugated cardboard, glass, metal and plastic. These items are gathered in a single container for "single-stream" recycling. Waste Management picks this container separately from the trash and delivers it to recycle center for separation and to be recycled. The district's goal is to maximize single-stream recycling through training and awareness.

The City School District of ÉðÊ¿Âþ» has a management plan to identify and manage asbestos building materials in accordance with the EPA Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act of 1987 (40 CFR Part 763).
Periodic inspections are done every six months. The triennial re-inspection that reviews and updates the asbestos management plan for all district buildings was completed in July 2019. The plan is kept on file at the district’s administrative headquarters in Academy Park. These records are available for review.
